Seit seiner Gründung im Jahr 2007 ist Tumblr immer ein Ort für offene, kreative Selbstentfaltung inmitten einer Netzcommunity gewesen. Um unseren Gründer David Karp zu zitieren: Wir sind stolz darauf, eine Generation von Künstlern, Schriftstellern, Schöpfern und Kuratoren dazu inspiriert zu haben, unsere Kultur neu zu definieren und zur Stärkung der Individualität beizutragen.
In den letzten Monaten haben wir uns, inspiriert von unserer geschichtsträchtigen Vergangenheit, ernsthafte Gedanken darüber gemacht, was wir künftig für unsere Community sein wollen, und wir haben hart daran gearbeitet, den Grundstein für eine bessere Tumblr-Zukunft zu legen. Wir haben erkannt, dass wir uns verändern müssen, um unser Versprechen und unsere kulturelle Rolle weiterhin erfüllen zu können, insbesondere wenn diese Kultur sich stetig wandelt. Einige dieser Veränderungen begannen mit der Förderung eines konstruktiveren Dialogs zwischen unseren Community-Mitgliedern. Heute machen wir einen weiteren Schritt, indem wir Erwachseneninhalte, einschließlich eindeutiger sexueller Inhalte und Nacktheit (mit einigen Ausnahmen), ab sofort nicht mehr zulassen.
Stellen wir zunächst etwas unmissverständlich fest, das nichts mit der heutigen Änderung der Richtlinie zu tun hat: Alles, was Minderjährigen schadet, einschließlich Kinderpornographie, ist abscheulich und hat keinen Platz in unserer Community. Wir verfolgen seit jeher eine Nulltoleranzstrategie gegenüber solchen Inhalten und werden das auch weiterhin beibehalten. Wir investieren auch ständig in die Durchsetzung dieser Richtlinie durch professionelle Maschinenüberwachung, ein wachsendes Team von menschlichen Moderatoren und Funktionen, die es Usern leicht machen, Missbrauch zu melden. Wir arbeiten außerdem eng mit dem National Center for Missing and Exploited Children und der Internet Watch Foundation zusammen - zwei Organisationen von unschätzbarem Wert, die sich an vorderster Front für den Schutz unserer Kinder vor Missbrauch einsetzen. Über diese Partnerschaften melden wir Verstöße gegen diese Richtlinie den Strafverfolgungsbehörden. Wir können nie alle Missetäter daran hindern, dass sie unsere Plattform missbrauchen, aber wir legen größten Wert darauf, die Community so sicher wie möglich zu machen.
Was ändert sich also?
Einträge, die Erwachseneninhalte enthalten, sind auf Tumblr nicht mehr erlaubt, und wir haben unsere Community-Richtlinien aktualisiert, damit sie diese Änderung berücksichtigen. Wir wissen, dass Tumblr auch ein Ort ist, an dem User frei über Themen wie Kunst, Sex-Positivität, Beziehungen, Sexualität und ihre persönlichen Lebenswege sprechen können. Wir wollen unbedingt, dass diese vielfältigen Ausdrucksmöglichkeiten in der Community weiterhin bestehen, deshalb streben wir mit unserer neuen Richtlinie ein gutes Gleichgewicht an.
Warum tun wir das?
Wir sind immerzu darum bemüht, Tumblr zu einem sicheren Ort für Kreativität, Selbstfindung und ein tiefes Gemeinschaftsgefühl zu machen. Da Tumblr weiter wächst und sich entwickelt und wir ein immer besseres Verständnis für unseren Einfluss auf die Welt da draußen haben, sind wir auch dafür verantwortlich, diesen Einfluss über verschiedene Altersgruppen, Bevölkerungsgruppen, Kulturen und Denkweisen hinweg zu berücksichtigen. Wir haben viel Zeit damit verbracht, die Vor- und Nachteile der Selbstentfaltung in einer Community abzuwägen, die auch Erwachseneninhalte zulässt. Dabei wurde uns klar, dass wir ohne diese Inhalte die Möglichkeit haben, einen Ort zu schaffen, an dem sich mehr Menschen wohlfühlen.
Kurzum: Es gibt im Internet keinen Mangel an Websites, die Inhalte für Erwachsene enthalten. Wir wollen dieses Feld eben diesen Seiten überlassen und uns darauf konzentrieren, eine möglichst einladende Umgebung für unsere Community zu schaffen.
Was steht als Nächstes an?
Ab dem 17. Dezember 2018 werden wir mit der Umsetzung dieser neuen Richtlinie beginnen. Community-Mitglieder mit Inhalten, die auf Tumblr nicht mehr erlaubt sind, erhalten von uns im Voraus eine Vorwarnung und Maßnahmen, die sie ergreifen können, um eine Entfernung ihrer Inhalte nach eigenem Ermessen anzufechten oder sie außerhalb der Community zu erhalten. Es werden nicht alle Änderungen über Nacht stattfinden, da eine so komplexe Prozedur Zeit braucht.
Man muss auch anmerken, dass es nicht einfach ist, die unerwünschten Inhalte von, sagen wir, einem politischen Protest mit Nacktheit oder der Statue von David zu unterscheiden. Wir setzen auf automatisierte Tools zur Identifizierung von Erwachseneninhalten und auf Menschen, die unsere Systeme schulen und überwachen. Wir wissen, dass es Fehler geben wird, aber wir haben unser Bestes getan, um eine Richtlinie zu erstellen und durchzusetzen, die die Breite des Ausdrucks in dieser Community respektiert.
Aber vor allem wollen wir so transparent wie möglich sein, was unsere Entscheidungen und die Ressourcen betrifft, die wir euch zur Verfügung stellen, einschließlich detaillierterer Informationen, Produktverbesserungen und zusätzlicher Content-Moderatoren, die direkt mit der Community und den Inhalten interagieren.
Wie ihr, lieben auch wir Tumblr und das, was es für Millionen von Menschen auf der ganzen Welt bedeutet. Mit unserem Handeln wollen wir immer nur das Beste für unsere Community erreichen. Wir werden nicht immer alles richtig machen, besonders am Anfang, aber wir sind entschlossen, eure Erfahrung positiv zu gestalten.

How to Backup Your Blog
I’ve had a lot of people asking me how to acquire a back-up folder of all of their content. Here’s the easiest way I’ve found so far..
1) Go to Settings
2) Click on your blog in the right hand menu
3) Scroll all the way down and you’ll see the backup option
4) Once you’ve initiated the backup, it’ll take a while to build the file (mine took two days)
5) Once it’s ready to download, download the zip file (or export it) and you’ll have every image/gif/comment/video you’ve ever posted (and yes, even re-blogs) right there in a neat little folder.
My folder even contained all of the videos I’ve reblogged, even though I wasn’t the source.
If anybody has any clever and/or efficient tricks for uploading the content to Twitter (aside from doing it the hard way, post by post) please let me know and I’ll spread the word.

December 17th - a rescue plan
Some good news, I’ve been talking to two developers now and got them working together, we just had a meeting with the guys behind an existing large (millions of users) site similar to Tumblr, with a vibrant and open-minded community, and more importantly, it has open-minded owners who believe in free speech. They think we can get something done here to rescue the whole community.
I’m not allowed to reveal the site name yet. I can tell you it’s mainstream, open to everyone, open-minded and welcoming. (It’s not WordPress or any site owned by Facebook or Twitter. It’s not Pillowfort, that’s in closed beta. It’s not Ello, that’s mainly for artists. It’s not kinkspace or fetlife, those are too specialist. It’s not jux, that seems to be closed. It’s not Soup, that seems still in development and too small.)
One of the reasons for delaying the announcement for next few days is they don’t want a “land grab” where people take the names of current popular Tumblr users over there (cyber squatting). So they are looking at ways for existing Tumblr users to keep the same names on the new site.

The plan is, broadly:
1. By December 9th, announcement of the new site and how to secure your username there
2. By December 10th, an online tool for bloggers to copy their existing content to the new site automatically, with the same tags and captions.
3. Bloggers will need to copy their content across between December 10th and December 17th if they want to use the automatic tool.
4. My understanding is that after December 17th there will be no public access to any “flagged” posts on Tumblr, but the original poster will still be able to see the flagged post (for a short time at least). Therefore, the original poster may still be able to manually download a post to their own PC or phone, after December 17th, and manually upload it to the other site. But if you have lots of posts that will take a long time, it will be better to use the automatic tool before December 17th.
Please understand that these dates are approximate and may change for technical or other reasons.
There may be a few rough edges or not so perfect looking site design on the transfer tool. Everyone is doing their best. The main goal here is to help as many people as possible preserve access to their content, in the short space of time Tumblr has allowed us, and preserve as much as possible of the Tumblr community spirit somewhere new.
The new site will cater for photo, GIF, text and html posts. It will not offer video and audio posts, due to cost reasons - maybe in future, but for now you will need to preserve video and audio content yourself in some other place.
If your Tumblr blog has a mixture of original content and reblogs, or all reblogs, all of that can be copied over to the new site. Reblogs will become “your” original content if nobody else posted them yet, otherwise they will be shown as reblogs. The devs are looking at ways to preserve attribution of reblogs back to the original Tumblr poster, if that person also moves to the new site.
Important: your Likes cannot be copied from Tumblr to the new site. You will have to go find the same posts again on the new site, and like them afresh.
(Similarly, existing reblog comments, asks, messages and other user interaction on Tumblr cannot be copied to the new site - that’s just too much to do, in the short time available.)
If you want to preserve any of your existing Liked posts on Tumblr, you will need to either: (1) download the post to your own PC, or: (2A) reblog it now to your own Tumblr blog, and then (2B) use the automatic tool, before December 17th, to move your whole Tumblr blog across to the new site.
If you have Liked a lot of posts here on Tumblr, the gridllr.com webapp should be able to help you do steps 1 and 2A quickly, I mean download or reblog.
(Someone complained to me today about the appearance of Gridllr on a phone. It’s best to use Gridllr on a PC, Mac or Tablet with a large screen.)
If you have liked a post here on Tumblr and the original poster decides to delete it, or even to delete their entire blog, some time before December 17th, then that post will be permanently lost. So if you want to be sure to preserve any of your Liked posts, you should best download or reblog as soon as possible. If it’s reblogged to your own blog it is safe from deletion, at least for next few days.
Obviously, you will lose access, after December 17th, to all past posts you have liked, if Tumblr has flagged them as NSFW. Again, the steps (1), or (2A) and (2B) covered above will be the only way to hold on to these posts.
Count me in .. seems like a Great Plan !!!

December all tumblr adult blogs cease…
So as with all good things tumblr will be closing down adult content blogs and posts with affect from the 17th of December, So sadly regardless if you have 2 followers or 1 million if your blog is adult themed it shall be removed and if you just enjoyed checking out blogs, you will not be able to anymore.
With this in mind many of us have spent great efforts in creating content, searching out and blogging content and alas we to shall have it taken away…. However if you wish to save your blog and content you can follow the following steps and keep a copy of your efforts…
You can export of all of the content you’ve created for your blog, and tumblr will package it up into a convenient ZIP file for you to download.
To start the process, go to your account settings on the web:
- Click “Settings” under the account menu at the top of the dashboard (the person silhouette).
- Select the blog you’d like to export on the right side of the page.
- Scroll down to the “Export” section and click the “Export [blog name]” button.
- You’ll see a message indicating that your backup is processing.
When your blog’s content is finished collecting, the processing message will be replaced with a “Download backup” button. Click this button to download a ZIP file of your blog’s exported contents.
If you want to export the contents of more than one of your blogs, you’ll need to initiate this process separately for each blog.
Your blog export may include:
- A Posts folder, with an HTML file for each post.
- A Media folder, with the media from your posts, plus any media you’ve uploaded (like in messaging). These files will be in the format you uploaded them in (JPG, GIF, PNG, MP4, and so on).
- A representation of your blog’s messaging conversations, in XML format.
- A representation of your blog’s posts, also in XML format.
Note that your backup may take some time to process. Check back on your blog’s settings page periodically to see if it has completed.
